So You Think You Are, "Insignificant," Do You?

(Someone asked why I type in bold print certain segments of the devotionals.  The text in bold print are always and only Biblical references.)
******************
"I am insignificant and despised, but I don't forget your commandments." (Psalm 119:141, NLT)

I submit to you that if you, "don't forget [His] commandments," it really does not matter how anyone sees you.  Jesus Christ sees you as an obedient, faithful, very significant and honored follower of His.

A thought occurred to me as I was reading today's Psalms, which included Psalm 119.  The longest chapter in the Bible is given solely to, "the Word of God."  Do you think the Holy Spirit is saying something in this?!?  There are at least 11 different "descriptions" of the Word in Psalm 119, "law, testimonies, ways, precepts, statutes, commandments, judgments, word, words, counselors, ordinances, songs."  All of these give insight concerning the Person of Jesus Christ, "The Word of God."  All of these are yours and mine, that is, if we avail ourselves of them/Him.

I have referred before to a great quote of Derek Prince: "God is committed to His Word, and as we are committed to His Word, God is committed to us."  Now I readily admit that I have issues just as everyone on the planet.  I have sin, flaws, personality traits which are not good reflections of Jesus.  But as I continue in Jesus and His Words during all the days I have left on this Planet, I will always have, "counselors, testimonies, ways," which are Who and What He is, to impart the very Life of the Living Triune God in me.  Some of us have more "issues" than others.  But none of us have any more of, "The Word of God," and, "the Words of God," than anyone else.  The only difference is, who avails himself of such.  Psalm 119:97 gives us a key to victory in the battle of life, "Oh, how I love Your law!  It is my meditation all the day."

Father, in Jesus' Name, You have given all I need------ You.  Amen.

Same, "Rock"

"Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.  For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ."  (1 Corinthians 10:1-4)

Some people like/need preaching and teaching which say something new about Bible passages.  I have heard many times over the years about the need for a "fresh word."  Our text today is as "fresh" to me as it was the first day I read it, even though that was about 55 years ago.  The Words of God are described as, "....Living and active."  Such words do not grow stale; only dead and inactive does that.

How can you improve on the great revelation of our text?  What more can one say? The ancient Hebrews had a, "....Rock [Who] followed them....  And we are told, "that Rock was Christ," and they regularly, "drank of that spiritual Rock."  Many mistakenly believe that Christ came into being 2000 years ago.  But Christ did not "come into being."  He was always Being, "Before Abraham was, I Am."  What a great gift of life in Jesus Christ.  "The Scriptures tell us, 'The first man, Adam, became a living person.'  But the last Adam--- that is, Christ--is a life-giving Spirit."  Our great Life-Giver appeared to Joshua on the plains of Jericho and was the fourth man in the fiery furnace, of Whom the king said, "....and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!"

Christ is still the same, "I am the Bread of Life," and Water of Life He was to the Hebrews in the wilderness, "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."  This same Rock "follows" you and me today.  Wherever we go, whatever we do, no matter how great the joy and celebration, or the pain and heartache.  Jesus Christ, our Rock, "follows" us.  Even better, dwells in us------------------------- I love the smell of fresh bread.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I thank You for Your Rock of Living Water and, "I am the Bread of Life," Jesus.  Amen.

"Nimrod, The Mighty Hunter," Just May Want to Reconsider

One of the early battles in the age-old struggle started with a sling and five stones. In our life time, the Jews have increased the fire power------------ just a bit.  Yet the words of David still apply, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin.  But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."

"They have also surrounded me with words of hatredand fought against me without a cause.  In return for my love they are my accusersbut I give myself to prayer."  (Psalm 109:3, 4)

The Hebrew text just says, "but I prayer."  In the face of everything, "....words of hatred...without a cause.  In return for my love they are my accusers...," the answer to all is, "but I prayer."  The Jews and those, "who are blessed with faithful Abraham," i.e., the Followers of Jesus, have face hatred and fighting, "without a cause," from the time of Abraham.  It will not change until Jesus' Second Appearing, "but I------- prayer."

Our text does not tell us about whom David is speaking.  It could have been Saul, the Philistines, Syrians.  It does tell us, however, that even though David loves his accusers and prays for them, they were nonetheless still those who, "fought against me without a cause," and as those who have, "fought against," the People of God throughout the centuries------------------ irrational, unfounded, pure hatred.

Psalm 109 has been referred to in Biblical studies as an "imprecatory" Psalm; verses 6-20 reveal this.  They are just too "violent," too "unChristian like," too vindictive for most.  Because of this, some commentators and Church "authorities" over the centuries considered eliminating this Psalm, and others like it, from the Psalter.  That is what people do with passages they either do not understand or just do not like.  In the latter case, it is nothing but a moral judgment on God.  Nevertheless, Psalm 109 is here to stay.  It is a part of the, "God-Breathed," Word.  As such, I read it monthly and pray it monthly------- and leave the "outcome" to our Lord Jesus Christ.  I commend the whole Psalter as the best prayer book ever, His Book, His "Idea."

Father, in Jesus' Name, I embrace your Words, all Your Words.  Amen.

The "Two-Edged Sword"

"And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them." (1 Sam. 17:3)

This has always been a "mighty" passage for me.  Every time I come to it, I see the conflict of the ages, "The Philistines...on a mountain on the one side, and Israel...on the mountain on the other side...."  Both sides, "dr[aw]n up in battle array to encounter," the other.  This today is for you and me.  The Enemy of men's souls, "drew up in battle array," long before you and I even rose from sleep this morning.  In fact, he is in, "battle array," 24/7/365(6).

David's "declaration" to Goliath was based solely in the Words of God.  "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin.  But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."  These words preceded David's sling and the stone.  All through Scripture, this principle uttered by David rules.  It rules in every situation of mankind, from the smallest personal matter to the matters of nations.  The battle of life finds the one who stands on this principle emerging as victor.  It is the Word of God, Jesus Christ, and the breath of His Mouth, the Scriptures, which is foundational to finding ourselves on the winning side in this cosmic battle.  50 years ago, the religious community in America stood idly by as the US Supreme Court outlawed, "the Words of God," and the prayer of Jesus in the state ("public") school system. America has been accelerating toward a total Darwinian culture ever since.

Consider the Scripture, "It is the same with my word.  I send it out, and it always produces fruit.  It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it."  The Bible says of Jesus, "....Out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword."  The, "God-Breathed," Scriptures are, "the two-edged sword," which come, out of the Mouth of, "The Word of God," Jesus Christ.  Here alone, my friend, is victory for men and nations.  And here alone, just as on that valley floor between two opposing armies so very long ago, is personal and national survival.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I was going to pray this, but instead I thank You for this:  Your Word is going out, "to the ends of the world."  Amen.

I SHOUT IT

"ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS.  THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFFBUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER."  (1 Peter 1:24, 25-- NASB-- Video Devotional coming a little later today)

This was my yesterday's latter part of the New Testament reading, and this is exactly the way our text is printed in my NASB.  One of our children once told me that writing in capital letters is like shouting.  I wonder if this is what the writers intended.  Anyway, it is very appropriate for me, because, "The Word of God," literally saved, and is saving my life.

Most of you reading this know of my testimony concerning the death of our oldest child, Stephen Paul.  That summer he went home, "to be with the Lord," it was the reading through the Bible in a little over a month period which brought me out of Bunyan's "Slough of Despond;" there is simply no better description of that summer.  Now you may remember, it was when Christian and Pliable fell into that "slough," that after Pliable struggled and got out, he abandoned Christian, and it was Help who rescued Christian.  Oh, Mr. "Help;" how we all need Him.

I know that Christian's "Slough" had to do with the awesome conviction of sin, but our sinfulness is not the only thing which attempts to destroy the Follower of Jesus.  Tragedy, suffering, pain, abandonment, rejection, and the list could go on and on, all these are pitfalls which are designed by the Enemy to destroy the Believer in Jesus Christ.  But that summer so long ago, Jesus, "The Word of God," came to me in the most "real" way I ever experienced, and empowered me, yes, I mean literally empowered me by His Words.  That is what Genesis 1 to Revelation 22 is in reality, the words of Jesus, the, "God-Breathed," Word.

"ALL FLESH IS GRASS."  Indeed, no one has to tell me that.  This grassy flesh was about to, "WHITHER[], AND FALL[] OFF," but I was rescued by, "THE WORD OF THE LORD (Who) ENDURES FOREVER."  Yea, I'm SHOUT'N it.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I can never, ever thank You enough for your Help which brought me out of "The Sough of Despond."  Amen.
