The Need To Rediscover Him and His Garden

"There was no man to work the ground....Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day."  (Genesis 2:5b & 3:8--NIV)

The Garden was just that, The Garden--- The Life------ The Living Triune God and His friends, enjoying each other.  The Garden was in many respects incidental.  The Purpose of the Godhead was "
walking" with His "new" friends----- "in the cool of the day," man "work[ing] the ground," taking care of the animals.  The sophisticates will laugh about being "farmers," ridicule primitive culture, no "science" or advancements, no electronic worship.  But would someone please tell me how man has improved himself?  (Just a thought here, you understand, but I wonder how much unemployment we would have if man would never have left------- "to work the ground.")

Anyway, generations beyond our texts we read of Enoch.  We have no record of great achievements, countries visited, people healed, miracles performed, thousands flocking to his "meetings," his high demand as an author and conference speaker--just, "
Enoch walked with God."  Then many generations later another one of my favorites, Isaac, who one evening with no ipod, no auto, just "went out to meditate in the field at the eventide."

Frankly, all we have done is to complicate a simple, I repeat, simple, man-and-his-Maker Purpose--------------------- I miss it.  Through His Precious Blood of the Cross, Jesus came to restore us to the intended fellowship of, "
in the cool of the day"-- "walked with God"-- "out to meditate in the field at the eventide."  Here is the call of Jesus to His Church today: "Behold, I stand at the door and knockIf anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."

Father, in Jesus' Name, I want to come back from wherever and however I may have left Your Wonderful, Gracious Intent.  Amen.

The Starting Point Of Knowledge

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction."  (Proverbs 1:7)

It's really quite simple, isn't it.  If I want knowledge (literally, "perception, skill"), I must start at the God-Appointed "Beginning."  Mankind has been on the quest for knowledge since the Garden, but continually rejects The Source.  Satan said, "You want knowledge?  I give you the tree.  Don't listen to that one who comes here in the 'cool of the day.'  Listen to me.  If you are going to have true knowledge, you must discover it for yourself.  You are special.  In fact, if you get the 'knowledge' I offer, 'you will be as gods!'  Some results of this lie?---------Darwinism---------------------------- and modern America.

History reveals just how cursed the human race has been for believing The Lie in the Garden.  Man in rebellion opted and still opts for the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil."  It is a tree from which he cannot live; "....For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Our text today contrasts The Knowledge which originates in "the fear of the LORD," Jesus Christ, and that which originates in the heart of undisciplined fools.  The choice is simple yet fraught with the "struggle...against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."  You and I and America and the nations of the earth will win or lose in this cosmic "struggle" to the degree we have "the fear of the LORD" Jesus Christ.  The Word, Jesus, "the Christ of God," says to you, to me, to the planet, "Come, my children, listen to Me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD."

Father, in Jesus' Name, I say with the hymn writer of old, "Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come!...Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come!  Out of myself to dwell in Thy love, Jesus I come to Thee!  Amen.

"Those Who Feared the Lord Talked Often One to Another"

"Then those who feared the Lord talked often one to another; and the Lord listened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who reverenced and worshipfully feared the Lord and who thought on His name." (Malachi. 3:16-- Amplified Bible)

The worship of Michael Jackson going on in the media reveals the status of American culture.  Charles Simpson once said, "What does it say about a culture which idolizes a man who stands on stage and grabs himself?"  America is a culture which is described in the verses just prior to our text-- "You have said, It is useless to serve God, and what profit is it if we keep His ordinances and walk gloomily and as if in mourning apparel before the Lord of hosts?"  In other words, the life style of repentance and holiness is just not worth it!

The verses just prior to our text reveal a people of, "what's-the-use?"  They looked around them, looking at the lives of the "proud and arrogant...and evildoers," and came to the conclusion that the wicked are having all the fun in life.  I was preaching in a church service recently, and there were several young people who were talking almost the entire time.  They finally got up and left.  I don't know what was going on in their lives, and I certainly have no illusions of my preaching as being something great, inspiring, or convicting.  But I could not help but wonder, "Is my witness to Jesus Christ no longer relevant to American culture?  Am I out of date?"

Regardless, the follower of Jesus is to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior, and King, to proclaim His suffering, His shedding of His Most Precious Blood, to proclaim and live in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, to speak of and live in anticipation of Jesus' eminent return, and to continue to read, study and meditate in our "God-Breathed" Word, praying for men and nations, sharing Jesus with the lost, and to strive to be as those described in our test, "who worshipfully feared the Lord and who thought on His name."  Do not be dissuaded from His Purpose for your life.

Father, in Jesus' Name, write our text in my mind and heart.  Amen.
