We Are In A War--THE War

"Deal with them as with Midian, as with Sisera and Jabin at the torrent of Kishon, who were destroyed at Endor, who became as dung for the ground." (Psalm 83:5, NASB)

General William Tecumseh Sherman once said, "I am tired and sick of war.  Its glory is all moonshine.  It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.  War is hell."
In the Spring of 1865 he accepted the surrender of the largest numbers of Confederate soldiers of any Union commander during the war.  He is known as the "author" of what was called "modern warfare," i.e., total war, complete destruction of the enemy's ability to make war, materially and psychologically.  And this total war, my friend, is the very kind of war into which you and I were born, yes, even before our surrendering our lives to Jesus.  We were literally born into the midst of war.  This is why we are commanded to, "Put on the whole armor of God."  Those who have not this armor are destined to lose.

Now lest some think I am some kind of warmonger, one needs to understand that you and I are in a war which began even before the Garden; our text is a small statement of this war.  Furthermore, as we read the Book of Revelation, we discover not only great worship, but also unimaginable warfare.  Read all the translations one wishes, analyze the Greek constructions of nouns, verbs and adjectives; nothing changes this in "The Revelation", for that matter, the Word of God in entirety.  In Daniel 10:12-14 we read, "Then he said to me, 'Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your wordsBut the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding (literally, "took his stand against me") for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of PersiaNow I have come to give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the latter (literally, "end of the days"), for the vision pertains to the days yet future.'" (NASB).

Our text is an appeal for our Lord Jesus Christ to, "Deal with them."  This is the very foundation of "spiritual warfare," not I and my shouting, my declarations, etc.  It is King Jesus, described in Psalm 46:7 (LB) as, "The Commander of the armies of heaven," who is the Initiator, the Sustainer, and Completer of the "Great War."  The outcome of this war was sealed at the Cross, in the death, and resurrection of our King and Savior, Jesus Christ.  So today, in a "small" skirmish or perhaps outright battle with the Enemy who is attempting to discourage you, to defeat and finish you, remember that from the Cross Jesus cried, "It is finished," yes, our forgiveness, our salvation, our deliverance, but also the Kingdom of Darkness is finished.  Jesus has, "Deal[t] with them."

Father, in Jesus' Name, help me to walk in submission to Your purposes in all of this.  Amen.

"But What About You?...Who Do You Say That I Am?"

"The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and...ask[ed] him to show them a sign from heaven....When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'Who do people say the Son of Man is....But what about you?...Who do you say I am?'" (Matthew 16, NIV)

Jesus is just not "enough" for some people.  Religion for them is a constant search in uncharted waters, something new, exciting, always discovering.  Well, I can say that over my years of loving and serving our Lord Jesus Christ, I have found all of the aforementioned.  Don't be like the people of our text, always looking for proof of God working, saving, healing, delivering, always wanting God, "to show them a sign from heaven."  Yet there He stood.

The religious folk of the First Century AD were always searching for some religious "truth."  Many were as J. B. Phillips paraphrases a section of Paul's Second Epistle to Timothy, "Creatures...with an exaggerated sense of sin and morbid cravings-- who are always learning and yet never able to grasp the truth."  In fact, "These men are...enemies to the truth...."  The Truth was before the people of First Century AD Israel, from the Golan to the Ne
gev, from the Eastern Judean border to the Mediterranean Sea, Jesus, "The Way, the Truth, and the Life," walked among them, "the carpenter's Son," loving, serving, "who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil...."  This Jesus, "came to His own, and His own did not receive Him."  Why?-- always wanting more, no deed, no words ever enough.  They were, "....never able to grasp the truth," when all the time there He was waiting to "grasp" and be grasped.

"But what about you?...Who do you say I am?"
--today, right now.  Embrace Jesus afresh today.  I know the questions, the cravings, which indeed can sometimes even be called, "morbid," the confusion, the understanding of life which at times may seem just beyond the next horizon on life's journey, all these are crying out for answers, coming to people in the midst of a hectic day, or as they lay their head on a pillow at night.  But in the midst of suffering and joy, victory and defeat, praise and complaining, here is Jesus---"I will never leave you nor forsake you"--- always here, always in us.  "Who do people say that I am?"  Well, they are saying the all sorts of speculative things people always have been saying about Him.  "But what about you (today)?...Who do you say I am?"---------------- today.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I say You are mine and I am Yours, "Faithful God."  Amen.

"....Prophecy Or By Word of Mouth Or By Letter...."

"Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us-- whether by a prophecy (spirit) or by word of mouth or by letter...."  (2 Thessalonians 2:1, 2a, NIV)

Unsettledness, confusion, error in Christendom has always come from, "....the teaching allegedly from (the Bible)---prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter."  How many people's lives have been ruined by, "prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter," fundamentally because the aforementioned were not based in Jesus Christ and His Words, nor were they, "in the mouth of two or three witnesses."  Too many today would rather live by their own, or some great leader's, or Christian Television's, "prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter."  The result is never good.

Whatever, "prophecy or...word of mouth or...letter," we may hear or read must always be tested, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God...."  We could put it this way, "Dear friends, do not believe every prophecy or...word of mouth...or letter, but test [them]."  And this "testing" is not some gooey feeling one may have or some "I did (or did not) bear witness to that."  The only way I know to, "test the spirits," is not by how I "feel" about something, but rather by the "God-Breathed" Words, the Bible.

Today you and I will face temptations of many kinds.  The most powerful will always be in the form of, "Hath God said...?"  Beware of what our ancestors succumbed to in the Garden, not only the doubt about His Words, but the tweaking of them.  As you and I, "abide," in Jesus and His Words, no word which is only, "allegedly from me," i.e., Jesus, will deceive us.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I only trust You and Your Words, not me and mine.  Word of God, rule in me.  Amen.

Yet There Is A River In A "Dry And Parched Land"

"You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek You; I thirst for You, my whole being longs for You, in a dry and parched land where there is no water....Because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of Your wings I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me."  (From Psalm 63, NIV)

I simply could not have said it better, or expressed the truth of life any differently.  God, He Who revealed Himself solely in Jesus Christ, is, "my God."  I have thirsted for Him all my life, and my whole being has always longed for Him.  Now, lest you think I am asserting a very saintly, spiritual-giant-life, let me explain.

The reality of the psalmist's expression is the reality of all humanity.  The central problem is that man does not realize for what, or rather, for Whom he is searching.
All the wealth-seeking, all the relationships-seeking, all the desperate search for security, love, etc., apart from, "You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek for You," is just a perversion of man's basic longing; it is perversion of creation.

Augustine, a North African Follower of Jesus, therefore, probably an Arab, once said, "Thou hast made us for Thyself, O God, and our hearts are restless 'til they find their rest in Thee."  It was also said of Augustine that at one point in his life he came "to understand that things said simply can be true, while things put eloquently may be lacking in substance."  Our text is, "things put simply."

This morning I was greatly impacted, full of thanksgiving by the words of our text.  I hold them again before you as a continued strength for the day.  You and I know, no matter where we live, that we are, "in a dry and parched land where there is no water," no matter what the hype of whomever and whatever.  Yet in this, "dry and parched land..., because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of Your wings," and as, "I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me."
As, "I cling to You," I hear you say, Lord Jesus, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drinkWhoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."

Father, in Jesus' Name, I thank You that You are my, "rivers of living water," and only because of You in me can, "I sing in the shadow of Your wings."  Amen.
