"They forgot their Savior Who had done great things in Egypt." (Psalm 106:21)
This is the United States of America, a nation who, "forgot."
This is not a new revelation. This is at least 60 years old, when a nation which was founded upon Biblical principles, abandoned its foundation. Many of the "Original" Thirteen Colonies required faith in the True God revealed in Jesus Christ to serve in their legislatures. Some required that all who so served be, "born again/from above." Now look at us.
"The Continental-Confederation Congress, a legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, contained an extraordinary number of deeply religious men. The amount of energy that Congress invested in encouraging the practice of religion in the new nation exceeded that expended by any subsequent American national government. Although the Articles of Confederation did not officially authorize Congress to concern itself with religion, the citizenry did not object to such activities. This lack of objection suggests that both the legislators and the public considered it appropriate for the national government to promote a nondenominational, nonpolemical Christianity." The truth of today's text is pre-coronavirus; it's about 60 years old. In 1962 & 1963, The United States of America codified the rejection the Prayer of Jesus and His Words, just one year apart. Whatever the "purpose" of the present "pandemic," as in all tragedies, all disasters, wars, famines, floods, etc., a people has the opportunity to literally, "throw itself on the mercy of the Court," the very Court of Heaven. What will the people groups of the world do?
The two verses prior to our text reveal that The Covenant People had, "....made a calf...They changed their glory into the image of an ox...." This is the vast, vast majority of the world's population, and, for most of America. I can say one thing, however, in the midst of all that is now occurring in the Earth: I have never seen so many calls to pray, so many prayer gatherings, not just national days of prayer, not even monthly prayer meetings, nor weekly, but daily prayer gatherings. I am right now involved in some of Covenant Church of Pittsburgh's three daily prayer meetings via Zoom. Is is reverential to say that maybe this time Jesus Christ has "finally gotten our attention"?!?
Father, in Jesus' Name, I do pray that the Church and the Nations, "Seek the Lord while He may be found." Amen.
When Peter, an 18 year old Norwegian, "heard the call to evangelize China, on that day he not only emptied his wallet into the collection plate, but included a small note with the words, 'and my life.'"
