I Honor A Great, "Sower"

"ListenBehold, a sower went out to sow."  Mark 4:3)

This parable is about both, "a sower," and, the soils.  Both have great privilege and responsibility.

103 years ago today a very important, "sower," in the history of the Church was born, Kenneth Thomas Barnett (they added the "e" years later).  He was the most effective soul winner I ever knew.  He was discipled by his Dad who won many people to Jesus in the rough world of railroad personnel.  When my Dad was in his 30s, a man who had been a drunk and roughian and who had come to Jesus through a street preacher further influence his my Dad, "a sower (who) went out to sow."  All I remember about the converted roughian is that his last name was Rutledge.  In the days when you had to use an operator, he would make a call, and while the operator was making the connection, he would say, "Say, operator, have you ever received the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior."  If he were in an elevator, after the door would close, he would say, "I trust that everyone in here has accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior."  We all admire such people, but few of us are such people.  Basically, we want people to think well of us.

My Mom used to say when she was shopping at a mall, Dad would sit in a spot where others were sitting.  When she came back, he was usually talking to someone about Jesus.  I have written this before, but I repeat it here.  I once asked the Lord why I was not a very good, "fisher[] of men."  He didn't rebuke me for that.  He just said, "Fish in the waters of your testimony."  When you and I find it difficult to just strike up a conversion with someone, when we have forgotten all the evangelism seminars we have attended and techniques we learned, there is always our testimony.  I suggest that we start with the testimony, not "end" with it.  Most I know try to "fish" with formula and technique rather than, "by the word of their testimony," more accurately, "the Word to which they bore witness."  Peter at Pentecost said, "This is that...."  In other words, "What you are witnessing (the testimony) is what the Word proclaims."  Or, the testimony is the result of the faithfulness of the Blessed Trinity to His Words.
Maybe this would be a good "approach" for us.  "This is that...."

I close with a prayer I used to pray more often and intend to "dust it off."  "Lord Jesus, lead me to someone with whom I can share You today."  Amen.

It's Really Quite Simple-- Believe Jesus Or Believe The Media

"I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land." (Joel 3:2, NIV)

If you want to understand what is going on in Gaza, do not believe MSNBC, CNN, or Fox.  Believe, " The Word of God."  Read Joel 3 and you will gain an accurate "picture" of current events.  Read anything else, and you will just further understand humanism.  Remember Auschwitz?  The Jews are fighting for their lives.
No matter what we read or hear in the world media, God's Word prevails.  Now you know that, don't you?!?  Of course war is horrible.  But it is, my friend, the result of man's sin, man's rebellion against, "The Word of God," Jesus, the Christ, and His Law/Word.  Rejection of Jesus will continue to bring more global chaos.  By the way, I find it most interesting that a major CNN reporter has been staying in and reporting from Jerusalem for many days.  Jesus keeps bringing the attention of the world as well as the attention of world leaders to, "The City of the Great King." (!)

My prayer that God embarrass the Obamas, the Kerrys, the Clintons, Sharptons, Blitzers of this world is being answered.  Kerry's anti Israel (which is just another way of saying, anti-Christ) proposals to stop the war in Gaza was totally rejected.  The demogague came home with "his tail between his legs."  I continue to prayer for the embarrassment of all those who oppose Jesus Christ and His Words.  Why do I pray such things?  I pray that if there is an ounce of repentance anywhere in the United States of America, and in any nation of the world, those who have been fighting God will surrender to Him and His Christ.  Extreme embarrassment, confusion, or coming to the end of oneself many times brings people to Jesus.  I pray it be so.

If our text is more than my quarterly trek through the Bible, if our text is more than some preacher's text, some Sunday School discussion, if it is indeed the very, "Word of God," then you and I must ignore the world's media concerning, well actually, anything.  They are humanists.  They are opposed to Jesus Christ, His Church, His Kingdom, His Land.  No one can do what is described in our text and win.  No one can ignore it as just Jewish nationalism and win.  The only people who "win" are those who submit their lives to Jesus Christ and His Words.  If the Lord God is going to, "bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat," (which, by the way, is in Israel), and, "There I will put them on trial"..., then no nation, not the United States, not the members of the United Nations, no nation and no president nor prime minister, no matter how lofty his attitude of himself
, will be able to do anything, pass any resolution or law to stop it.

Life is a continual battle between Truth and what the Bible calls, "
the lie."  This has not changed since the first lie recorded in Genesis 3, nor will it change until the Second Appearing of Jesus Christ.   From the person who continually struggles with acceptance of the love of Jesus, the forgiveness of sin, past, present, and future, to people who are "mad at God" because He did not or does not do everything they think He should, and, yes, even to the those who are faithful Followers of Jesus, the battle still rages.  Who and what do you believe, everyone and everything else, or, "The Word of God," Who Is Jesus Christ?  This will be tested yet today.  This will be tested the rest of our lives until we "go to be with the Lord," or His Second Appearing.  "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with the truth," the truth which is not a what, but a Who, Jesus.

Father, in Jesus' Name, in the midst of this ever increasing attack upon the Truth, I continually pray for "Truth-seeking."  Amen.

The Trust Factor

"Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help."  (Psalm 146:3)

Most governments in the world are socialistic, i.e., they are the guarantee of provision for most of the basics of life.  People just like the security of "Big Brother's" provision and protection.
The Word of God says, "Do not put your trust (confidence) in princes, nor in...man, in whom there is no help."  Yet those regular checks from a business or that Social Security is for many their "security."

Psalm 146 says b
asically, "Don't put your trust (confidence) in a man/woman, because he/she is just like you."  They are of one whose, "spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish."  This has nothing to do with the need of fellowship, or the love and mutual help of one another.  It is all about a, "trust, confidence," or to put it another way, upon whom and what do you and I rely?-- princes, place of employment, family?  Note how the psalmist goes on to contrast the departing, perishing, "help," and, "plans," with the Blessed Trinity.  "Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever, Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungryThe Lord gives freedom to the prisoners."  Now a cynic will argue with all of these statements of the Godhead.  But then, you and I must choose whom we believe.

Three quarters of our income is based on the "freewill offerings" of friends.  I joked with one of them
once that since the majority of our supporters are older than we, we could be in a very precarious position.  But as we both affirmed, none of us who, "follow the Lamb wherever He goes," are dependent on industry or, "princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help."  Our trust is Jesus.  Our hope is Jesus.  Our supply is Jesus.  When a people believe and live by this Truth, they will not look to nor demand from, "princes," nor from, "a...man, in whom there is no help."  I repeat and witness to, "Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God," Father, Son Jesus, and Holy Spirit.  As Psalm 146 goes on to say, "The Lord [Jesus] opens the eyes of the blind; The Lord [Jesus Christ] raises those who are bowed down....The Lord Jesus Christ shall reign forever-- Your God, O Zion, to all generationsPraise the Lord!"

Father, in Jesus' Name, throughout all my years I have had absolutely no reason whatsoever to doubt You.  Amen.

"We Ourselves Were Once Foolish,..But...Our Savior...Saved Us...."

"For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one anotherBut when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit...."  (Titus 3:4, 5)

How could anyone ever tire of this text?!?  Every quarter it brings new, refreshing blessing to me.  Paul, in the Holy Spirit, gives commands concerning behavior for the Followers of Jesus.  He reminds us, however, lest we should consider ourselves superior, better than, or more deserving than others when we do some things rightly, to remember how and what we were before we submitted our lives to Jesus Christ, "foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving lusts and pleasures...."

Then what happened?  Did we suddenly "get smart?"  Did our innate superior sense of morality take over?  No, nothing remotely like that.
Something, rather, SomeOne, "appeared," Jesus Who is, "the love of God our Savior toward man...."  Jesus appeared.  Jesus shed His Most Precious Blood.  Jesus gave His Life willingly and eagerly for you and me.  "....Foolish, disobedient, deceived," we were on our way to destruction and the fires of Hell.  Now because, "....the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared," you and I are saved, preserved, kept safe for Eternity, "not by works of righteousness which we have done," or can ever do.

Perhaps you are experiencing some doubt today.  Most would never admit it; but deep down there are times when our own sense of unworthiness creeps in, and we wonder how He could love us.  Will Jesus really see me through this season.  Or maybe it's more than a "season."  Maybe it's been all your life, struggle, nothing ever seems to go right, at least for very long.  Let Jesus "appear" afresh to you right now.  Allow the Holy Spirit to remind you just how loved, cared for you, "washing of regeneration," you really are.  In the midst of sickness and poverty over the centuries, many who have gone before us have experienced similar feelings.  And many have experienced persecution and suffering beyond our imagination.  Yet Fanny Crosby, blind from shortly after birth, could wright, "Jesus doeth all things well."  He does.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I say with Fanny Crosby, "Jesus doeth all things well"--------- because You do.  Amen.
