"I Created You To Cling To Me," Says The Lord

"'As a belt clings to a person's waist, so I created Judah and Israel to cling to me,' says the LORD.  'They were to be my people, my pride, my glory-- an honor to my name.  But they would not listen to me." (Jeremiah 13:11--NLT)

As never before, the nations of the world are searching for something or someone to cling to.  Yet so many in the world give cause for the Divine lament, "But they would not listen to me."  What about you?  Are you listening?  Never tire of asking yourself, "To whom or to what will I cling today?  One thing I can tell you; the revelation of my life, "as a belt clings to a person's waist...."-- a life clinging, hanging on, wrapped around Jesus Christ and His Words, has been energizing my day.

"As a belt clings to a person's waist, so I created [humanity] to cling to me, says the LORD"----  When we lost our first born son, Stephen, I was absolutely helpless.  I had nothing to cling to, save Jesus Christ and His Words.  I was a "belt" desperately clinging to His Waist.  Ideas, philosophy, religious talk, catch phrases did not save me; Jesus saved me------------and still saves me.  I was clinging to Jesus then and cling to Him today, not because I have been a particularly religious person, but because at an early age I came to love Him, and, as time would reveal, just how much a desperately lost, helpless sinner I am.

39 years ago next month, I came to the end of myself and a "new beginning" in Jesus Christ.  To my Maker I became more than ever before, "as a belt clings to a person's waist."  I have found only in Jesus Christ and His Words, my life, my hope, my everything.  I pray you find the same.

Father, in Jesus' Name, I ask that You help me to live in my created clinging purpose, that You can always say of me, "My pride, My glory--- an honor to My Name." Amen.

"This Is Life Eternal"

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent." (John 17:3-- KJV)

The Greek word translated, "and," is, "kai."  It carries the idea of "cumulative," not "addition." It is not God and Jesus Christ.  It is God in Jesus Christ, God revealed, God available, "God with us."  We could translate our text, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God in Jesus Christ Whom thou hast sent."

It is so much more life-giving to realize that "life eternal," our salvation, the Gospel is not a "plan," a prayer, or idea, but rather a Person.  You and I walk with and in the Person, Jesus.  If we walk in a plan, we will grow weary of "the plan."  If we walk in the Person, no weariness here, just what the hymn writer said, "Oh, how could I this Friend deny, when He's so true to me?"  The "burn out" we hear so much about does not come from a life imbedded in Jesus Christ.  It comes from a life imbedded in programs, activities, people.  Some Christian workers serve people, "in the Name of Jesus," of course.  They would be well advised to reverse the priority. Whatever is done then will be "life eternal"------------------ not burn out.

"Life eternal"-- this is what all humanity is looking for.  Those who say they don't want to live forever just don't understand, "....This is life eternal, that they might know...the only true God in Jesus Christ."  This is not longevity of life.  This is "life eternal," a completely different dimension.  If they understood this, they would say to us what the Athenians said to Paul, "We will hear you again on this matter."

Father, in Jesus' Name, lead me to people who have in their heart, "We will hear you again on this matter."  Amen.

"Christ Has Become A Servant of the Jews"

"Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.  Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up." (Romans 15:1)

Yesterday, outside the White House gates, Sarah, my sister, Kate, and I were standing with Israel and the Jews, holding signs, chanting, the whole nine yards.  At one point, I was standing next to an Orthodox Jew who was old enough to have been in the Holocaust.  He had a sign with a photo of the paratroopers who took the Temple Mount in June of 1967.  He held it as though it were a family photo.  It was.  I put my arm on his shoulder and just winked and smiled at him--- a completed gentile, honoring a child of Abraham.  The trip to DC, the standing for hours, the brief confrontation with police, everything was worth it in that moment. I was not just pleasing myself.  I was pleasing him, my neighbor, my brother, as my Dad used to say, "one of the Lord's relatives."  Glorious moment.

You and I will have more opportunities in the days ahead to "not just please ourselves" on behalf of the Jews and Israel.  What will you do?  The Bible says, "For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy...."  Whose servant will you become "on behalf of God's truth?"

Father, in Jesus' Name, Bless the man I stood with yesterday.  May he have seen You in me.  Amen.
