"....They answered,..'Some say...and others say'....[Jesus] said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?'" (Luke 9)
Yesterday's text, "Who touched Me?" brought to mind a phrase from the old 60's Star Trek, "Captain, the power drain on the engines is critical." Great truth today: You and I and the whole of the human race could never "power drain" our Lord Jesus Christ. Of Jesus' love, the old song says,
"Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky."
I believe, therefore, "Who touched Me?" is not only a question; it is an invitation from the Godhead. He has and is more than we could ever ask.
Likewise, our text today is also an "invitation" to every person on the planet. While others may be "pressing" upon God with no expectation, thinking Him to be a god other than Who He Is, He is asking us, "But who do you say that I am?" He comes to you and me to be Jesus to us, not some "referral" God, not someone else's testimony, revelation, or insight, as good as all that may be. Jesus is moving through the crowd of humanity today, seeking those who will touch Him, those who know for themselves, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."
What a wonderful Father, Son, Holy Spirit, "God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity." He so desires us that He asks you and me and all mankind, "Who do you say that I am?" Some are so tempted to lean mostly on the, "some say...and others say," rather than on personal relationship in Jesus Christ. He is no God afar off, no God of self flagellation, no God who requires "picking yourself up by your own bootstraps." He is, "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace," moving through the crowd, passionately desiring to be our, "Great Shepherd of the sheep." Our Lord Jesus Christ is still, "Immanuel, God with us," yes, but even more wonderfully, He is to those who touch Him in expectancy in the "crowd" of life, "God [in] us."
Father, in Jesus' Name, thank You so much that You desire personal, not second hand relationship with me. Amen.
