"Save Yourselves"

"With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, 'Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.'" (Acts 2:40)

We are saved from sin, forgiven, names written in the "Book of Life," on our way to Heaven only through the Blood of Jesus Christ, His Blood of His Cross.  Yet we only walk in "so great a salvation" as we walk in obedience to the "Law/Word" of God. In reality, faith is not a noun; it's a verb.  Faith is not what I believe in my mind, nor even what I say.  Faith is what I do.  The Holy Spirit gives us something to "do" in our text, "[You] save yourselves from this corrupt generation."  The Greek word for, "save," here is exactly the same word for, "be saved," as in John 3:17, "that the world through Him might be saved."  Evangelical Christianity just will not come to grips with this reality. 

Salvation involves pure grace and mercy from the Living Triune God, and, pure obedience from you and me.  Scary thought, but according to our text, there is a reality in which you and I, "save yourselves."  Of course, our salvation is "not of works, lest any man should boast."  But it is of obedience, lest any of us be left out!  You can boast in works, but it is extremely difficult to boast in obedience.  Jesus said, "So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants.  We have done what was our duty to do.'"  No boast here, just the "duty" to obey.

How much we miss of the joy of our salvation when we just glory in our
salvation but do not obey in our salvation.  Our text is a command and call to holiness, "save yourselves from this corrupt generation."  This, "holiness, without which no one will see the Lord," is defined clearly in Jesus' prayer for us, "I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one." 

Throughout the "God-Breathed" Word the message is clear.  You and I can only, "save yourselves from this corrupt generation," in the grace, mercy, and power of the Living Triune God------------------------ and, our obedience------------------- through the grace, mercy, and power of the Living Triune God. 

Father, in Jesus' Name, by His Blessed Majesty, our Holy Spirit, I pray for the "eye salve" so I "may see," and "gold refined in the fire" so that I may "save [myself] from this corrupt generation."  Amen.
